Paul Pimentel, the deputy chief of staff and district director to U.S. Rep. Chris Shays, R-4, from Connecticut, recently informed the New Canaan League of Women Voters that "It's unlikely that there will be any real reform before the next election."
Per Pimentel, Shays' general views of immigration is that, "He believes in enforcing the laws that are currently on the books. His ideal bill would favor legal immigrants while decreasing the number of illegal immigrants." Pimentel says that Shays would like to provide illegal immigrants who are already here and who have clean backgrounds with "blue cards" that would give them permission to stay in the country, but not give them a path to citizenship.
In addition, Pimentel informed the group that Shays opposes a guest worker program. "Who is going to go home?" Pimentel asked. Moreover, according to Pimentel, Shays would like to establish a tamper-proof Social Security card or proof-of-work card.
