In the second Democratic presidential forum of the day Saturday, the Brown and Black Presidential Forum at a Des Moines high school, candidates agreed on the need for immigration reform, but argued over whether undocumented workers should be able to get driver's licenses.
U.S. Sen. Hillary Clinton, who is against issuing driver's licenses to undocumented workers, said the license issue threatens to become a distraction that could sidetrack attempts to pass far-ranging immigration legislation. "Ultimately, we've got to move toward comprehensive immigration reform," she said.
But New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, who has signed a measure to provide licenses, said the licenses are needed to help traffic safety. He said he doesn't buy the argument that lawmakers should wait for a larger solution. "The fact is, Congress hasn't acted," Richardson said.
